Brothers and Sisters,
I want to ask you one question today that is going to change how you think about leadership forever.
Are you leading from the front or managing from behind?
Because here’s the reality – there’s a massive difference between the two. And most people who call themselves leaders are actually just managers hiding behind a title.
The Leadership Crisis
We live in a world where everyone wants to be called a leader but nobody wants to do the hard work that leadership actually requires.
Real leadership isn’t a title. It’s not a corner office. It’s not a LinkedIn badge or a social media following.
Real leadership is ACTION.
In the SEAL teams, we had a simple rule: Leaders lead from the front. Not from behind a desk. Not from behind a screen. Not from behind excuses.
From the FRONT. In the arena. In the fight. Setting the standard that everyone else follows.
The Three Signs You’re Managing Instead of Leading
1. YOU TALK MORE THAN YOU DO
Leaders who manage from behind spend most of their time telling others what to do while doing very little themselves.
Real leaders set the example. They show up. They do the work. They demonstrate the standard they expect from everyone else.
2. YOU AVOID THE HARD CONVERSATIONS
Real leadership requires courage. The courage to have the conversations nobody wants to have. The courage to hold people accountable. The courage to say “This isn’t good enough” when it isn’t.
If you’re avoiding hard conversations, you’re not leading. You’re managing. And eventually, your avoidance will cost you everything.
3. YOU PROTECT YOUR COMFORT
The moment you start protecting your comfort over your mission, you’ve stopped leading.
Real leaders embrace discomfort. They run toward the hard things. They do what needs to be done regardless of how it makes them feel.
The SEAL Teams Leadership Formula
Lead yourself first. Lead others second. Lead always.
That’s it. That’s the formula. Three simple steps that will transform how you lead in every area of your life.
But here’s the catch: Most people can’t get past step one. They can’t lead themselves. And if you can’t lead yourself, you will NEVER be able to lead anyone else.
Start there. Lead yourself first. Everything else follows.
Your Mission
This week, I want you to ask yourself every single day:
Am I leading from the front today? Am I setting the standard? Am I doing the hard things? Am I having the hard conversations?
If the answer is no – course correct immediately. Get back to the front. Lead always.
Ready to level up your leadership?
Stay strong,
Jason Redman
P.S. – Leaders lead from the front. Always. No exceptions. Get after it.
