PHYSICAL EMOTIONAL TOUGHNESS

PHYSICAL EMOTIONAL TOUGHNESS

How well can you take a beating? Guys, I have one superpower: I can get my ass kicked like nobody else. I’m not the best fighter. I’m not the smartest. I’m not the prettiest. But I can take a beating and keep getting up. Always have. There’s a saying in the SEAL teams: “If you’re gonna be dumb, you gotta be hard.” Meaning… you better be able to take a beating if you’re going to keep doing dumb stuff. I’ve built a reputation around that kind of physical toughness. Shot. Stabbed. 40 surgeries. You name it, I’ve probably had it happen to me. But here’s what I’ve learned, especially these last few weeks: there’s a massive difference between physical toughness and emotional toughness. And emotional toughness is so much harder. It’s the invisible wounds that carry the deepest impact: losing a teammate, carrying guilt over a mistake, losing someone you love. I’ve been dealing with my own invisible wound lately: losing my best friend and service dog, Karma. I’ve been hard. I’ve been able to push through a lot in my life. But this one has hit differently, and I had to be honest about that.

The lesson here, guys: physical toughness can only get you so far. You can run 100 miles, lift 10,000 pounds, get your ass kicked on the jiu-jitsu mat, and get back up, but if you can’t overcome the invisible wounds, you’re going to get stuck on that X. So this week’s message: build your emotional resilience the same way you’d build physical toughness. Get up. Get off the X. Drive forward. It doesn’t stop hurting completely, but with time, it gets easier to carry. Get up and overcome.
